MS is pretty thorough on there recommendations on an upgrade to XP, including their software engine that checks your PC for a possible upgrade. But, is not perfect. An optional dual boot possible in the upgrade may help the transition. Think twice, 3 or 4 times before moving. -- Jonny.

But, if there are problems with Vista, or i don't like Vista, can i put an XP Ghost image back on the laptop? Or will XP be de-activated? An OEM version of Vista will not do an in place upgrade of XP. It can only do a clean install, so the XP license will be available to install as a dual boot on that machine

All these "What If's" can be avoided if the user images their present system before a Vista upgrade. ~$40 for Acronis True Image, 30 Minutes of time to create/burn version of Windows Vista to upgrade XP, you will no longer be able to use that version of XP. My Vista HP install went nearly flawlessly on a media center PC. Did lose the use of some older software and peripherals though. You can't install XP as an upgrade to Vista. I recently purchased Norton Partition Magic with a view to partitioning one of my drives to install Vista to dual boot. To my dismay I found after creating the I do have a laptop with Home XP so I could upgrade that machine but my desire was to upgrade my desktop machine and leave the smaller one alone.

The problem is, people like you think Vista should be just an upgrade of XP and are thrown for a loop when they discover that it isn't. Vista is a whole new ballgame. By now most users realize that in a dual boot system your Vista System Restore settings are wiped out if you boot to XP? XP never had this problem

I used to have a dual-boot PC and for games that don't depend on registry settings, I often ran those from same directory in each OS separately. Upgrade to 8800GT didn't change any of that. I haven't done Vista64 vs WinXP comparison, but I don't feel any performance drop between the two Vista versions.
